Almond Butter + Jelly Smoothie

I believe it’s true, that in America, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are among kids’ favorites. And, why wouldn’t they be?! When the nutty spread meets sugary jelly, the result is pure, sweet flavor love.

The traditional PB&J pairing is not complex, and perhaps the simplicity is precisely what makes the kiddos (and let’s be real…us) swoon. No longer am I a fan of fillings like ground nuts and jelly being spread between slices of bread, but I am all for the reinvention of nostalgic bites like the Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandie.

About one week ago, I was craving the salty-sweet combo of this childhood staple, and decided to blend the core ingredients into a chilled, creamy confection. It was the perfect midday pick-me-up. I prefer the flavor of almonds over peanuts and so used almond butter in this smoothie. Truthfully, any nut butter will do, as will any frozen berry combination.

As always, I boosted the shake with superfoods, using maca powder for energy and hormone regulation, and hemp protein powder to get a bio-available dose of essential amino and fatty acids.

Makes: approx. (1) 18-ounce Smoothie

Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons raw almond butter

1 teaspoon raw maca powder

2 tablespoons vanilla plant protein powder

1 pitted medjool date, or 1 tablespoon low-glycemic sweetener such as coconut nectar yacon syrup (I use Navitas Naturals)

¼ cup frozen blueberries

¼ cup frozen strawberries

¾ cup plant-based milk, such as oat, hemp, almond, rice, hazelnut

6 ice cubes

1/2 medium avocado

1 packet Aloha Daily Good Berry

Preparation:

In a highspeed blender, combine all ingredients and blend on high for 30 seconds or until smooth. Sip slowly and remember to chew your smoothie!!
