Post Holiday Tummy Tonic

Christmas week was slow and soothing this year as I had set the intention to gift presence more than presents. I am so grateful for nights shared by the fire and holiday spirit movies, kettles of soup that simmered on the stove, and a candle lighting ceremony held in honor of our winter solstice transition. Each day sparkled with simplicity and closeness––two elements of the holidays not always experienced. For those of you who may have rushed about, traveled far, and perhaps overindulged, I’ve crafted a Tummy Tonic that will restore balance in your gut, calm you nerves, and give you the tender loving care you might be seeking right about now.

I sip this blend any time my gut is giving me trouble or when I feel myself coming apart at the seems. Exotic saffron calms the nervous system and reduces bloating and flatulence. Ginger is anti-inflammatory and comforts an upset stomach. Lemon juice serves as a liver detoxifier, sea salt supports a healthy balance of stomach acid, and licorice soothes the gut lining, which can become irritated from overeating, and from foods that stimulate digestive sensitivity.

Makes: 4-6 servings

Ingredients:

4-6 cups filtered water

1 (4-inch) long piece of fresh ginger, peeled, and grated

1/2 tablespoon fennel seeds (crushed with a mortar & pestle or in a spice grinder)

1/2 tablespoon licorice root

2 medium lemons, juiced

2 medium green apples, juiced

1 tablespoon raw local honey

pinch of sea salt

pinch of saffron

Preparation:

1. In a saucepan or kettle over medium-high heat, bring water, ginger, fennel seeds, and licorice root to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for fifteen minutes.

2. Add lemon juice, apple juice, honey, sea salt, and saffron, and simmer fifteen minutes more.

3. Ladle into mugs and sip slowly.
